Food.

Food is obviously one of the most important things of any living thing's life as it gives us everything we need to live, but for guineas it is so important that they have the correct food... This post might seem quite long but it is very important that your pet get the food they need!

Food is very important to anyone, but as guineas cannot produce their own vitamin C, it is vital that you give them the correct food to give them a boost in their vitamins after fruit and veg etc.

You will need to give each guinea pig around 30g of food per day, per guinea pig. I would recommend that you feed a guinea pig once in the morning and before you go to bed (meaning that they will have 15g each time). If you have two guinea pigs then I would recommend that you split this between two bowls so there's less chance of a guinea eating too much as they can get ill from being overweight.
You could also use a twin food bowl as you can see in the image to the right.

As for the actual food, I would recommend that you use pellets as guinea pigs are natural foragers meaning that if you use a muesli style food, the guinea could pick through it and just eat their favourite parts rather that all of the food that has the most nutrients. This doesn't, however, mean that you can't sprinkle little bits of this muesli style food into their bedding and wood chippings just to encourage their natural foraging habits.

Although I am calling the food muesli, DO NOT give your guinea pig the muesli that you may have for your own breakfast as, if you do not get food specifically for guineas, it can be very dangerous for them as they have completely different diets to humans! If you want the best food for your guinea, look for a package that says;

  • Pellets
  • Vitamin C
  • For guinea pigs

Toffee's food!
It may seem obvious that you have to find food for a guinea pig specifically but it can be a common misconception that rabbits and guineas are the same so please do not give your guinea pig rabbit food as it can be very dangerous for them.

I feed Toffee with pellets. These specific ones are from Pets at Home and you can find quite a lot of food there for guineas but there are also many other shops that can provide these foods as well.

It doesn't matter too much if you swop their food straight away if you run out of food without realising and can't find the same one, however it would be best if you gradually introduce new food to make sure your guinea is eating it and likes the new food. Here are a few simple steps to gradually introducing new foods;

  1. Introduce the food as a treat. Give them one or two pellets as a treat for a couple of days.
  2. Carry on using it as a treat but sprinkle it on top of their old food or mix it in to the old food for a few days
  3. Do a half and half split of their old food and their new food for a few days.
  4. Give them a full bowl of their new food and hopefully they will enjoy it :)

If you would like to introduce new food this way, then you will need to buy the new food when you still have quite a lot of old food left as it will take quite a while to do this.

*Important Notice*

If one of your guinea pigs stops eating suddenly then make sure it's not just that they can't be bothered to move and eat by offering them the food straight up to them or in your hand straight up to them. If they don't even check what's in your hand or in the bowl then consider taking them to the vets just to be on the safe side.
