Step By Step of how to clean your guinea out!...
Ok so I normally clean Toffee out around once a week, but as there is only one of her, you will need to clean two guinea pigs out more often or when you feel it starts to get quite dirty.
If your guinea is anything like Toffee, you may want to clean their houses out more often because she uses the inside of her house as her toilet...
Step By Step ---
1. Take the top off of the cage to make it easier to access the bottom with the dirty wood shavings in. I recommend that you put the cage lid onto the floor and put a clean blanket down (that you don't mind getting pooped on), then put a few toys in and your guineas in so that they can have a little run around. Make sure that you put something against each end of the cage because mine folds out to unclip and Toffee likes escaping.
2. Next, get your dustpan and brush and scoop up as many of the dirty wood-shavings as possible and put it all into a bin bag. You then need to brush the remaining wood shavings in a pile and scoop them up into the bag. It doesn't matter if there's a little bit left but try to scoop up as much as you can to make it as clean as possible for your guinea(s).
3. When you've done this, give the cage a good few sprays all around the inside with pet disinfectant, once you have done this, use some tissue to mop it all up. Even though it is perfectly safe, try to clean it all up anyway to be on the safe side :)
4. Now it is completely clean you can now begin to re-set up your guineas home. To do this you will need an average sized bucket filled around 3/4 of the way up. In summer I give her a little less so she doesn't get too warm and in winter, I give her a little more so she is nice and cosy.
When spreading out the wood shavings spread them out evenly in the cage - as it is wood, just check it over for larger, sharper pieces of wood or anything else that shouldn't be in there. I don't recommend that you try to make it yourself unless you are experienced and do not use saw dust as it can be dangerous to guineas when they breathe in the dust.
5. You can now start putting all of the toys and everything back into the cage! Until next time :)
