Living Environment

Keeping an indoor guinea pig happy...

*This post is specifically aimed at indoor guineas, I would advise that you look elsewhere for information on outdoor Guinea Pigs*

Toffee has lived in her bright blue enclosure since the day we got her and (as far as I am aware) is perfectly happy with her home. For the perfect home for your indoor guinea pig, I have provided a check list, because if anything like Tof Pops, your guinea will not settle for less than best....
Here goes:

  • Ok so essentials - every guinea need personal space so start off with a house. I suggest wood because fur can get caught in chewed plastic. (Don't try to make it yourself unless you know what you are doing though as glue and loose nails can harm guineas)
  • Next toys! Toffee has a ball with a bell in it, many chew toys and a tunnel to keep her entertained. (I would not advise that you keep the tunnel in all the time because they need plenty of space to run - as can be seen in the image below)
  • A food bowl - what else do you expect them to do with their food?
  • A water bottle - these can be bought from most pet shops in a variety of shapes and sizes.

Those are the essentials for your guinea pig's home as material things. Find more information on food, treats and chews in the 'Food' post...

Ok so I know my self that giving guinea pigs the space that they need can be difficult and sometimes I feel quite mean for not being able to fit a two storey cage in my room, but don't worry, as long as you get you're guinea pigs out in a secure, clean run in the garden for a few hours then they will be fine :)
On the other side of things, however, I would recommend that for a maximum of two guinea pigs that a cage is at least  51W x 120L x 58H (cm).
