Day 8 - Exercise in winter!

Toffee playing on my bed
Even in winter, your guinea(s) will still need exercise to stay healthy, and although they may run around their cage, it is still important that they have sometime exploring - even if they can't go outside because of the cold!

There are plenty of ways that you can exercise your piggies without taking them outside in the cold but first here are some ways to NOT do it!

  • Don't use exercise wheels or exercise balls. Guinea pig's spines can't bend the right way for them!
  • Don't leave them unattended as they could be hurt!
  • Make sure it is safe for them to run around! Make sure there are no electric sockets, no places for them to get under and no other, larger animals like cats or dogs!

And here are the best ways to give them exercise indoors! --

1) Use your bed for a little run around. Just put a few blankets on your bed so that if they do happen to 'go' on your bed then you won't have to wash all of your bed, just the blanket. When they are on your bed, make sure that you watch them and make sure that they can't fall off the edge or anything as they could injure themselves.

2) In a room of your house for a little more room. I normally use the kitchen because it is fairly small so I can keep an eye on her, and there is nothing for her to get behind in there. She also really likes licking the cold floor. If you are going to put them in the kitchen, make sure the floor is clean using pet safe disinfectant, also make sure there is nothing for them to get under, and that there isn't any other animals in the room (close the door).
