Day 5 - On Holiday

Hi everyone, so around this time of the year, lots of people are going on holiday. But what happens with your guinea pigs when you go on holiday?

If you are going on short holiday for only a wheekend, then your guinea(s) should be fine - just make sure that they are freshly cleaned out and have plenty of food, water, hay, and veg. If you are worried, then you could always ask a trustworthy neighbour just to pop in and check on them - but otherwise, they should be absolutely fine. (For a maximum of 2 days).

If you are, however, going away for any longer then you will be best to get someone to get someone will knowledge of guinea pigs to care for them...

Keeping them at home
If you decide to keep your piggies at home when you're on holiday, then make sure you are asking someone completely trustworthy who you are comfortable with them caring for your pets and that they will definitely do a good job caring for them as, if you are away for any more than a week, then the person caring for them will need to clean them out!

Sending them to another person's house
If you are planning to send them to another person's house then there are a few things that you need to keep in mind.
  • Make sure you have everything with you that they need, especially that they have enough food with them to last for the amount of time that you will be away.
  • Do they have any other pets that you don't? Guineas might be scared of big dogs or cats.
  • Are they in their house enough for your guineas to not be lonely and will the person caring for them have enough time to care for them? If they are constantly at work or busy then it might be worth finding someone else to care for them. My Nanna cares for Tof and she keeps her company because she isn't out of the house much...
  • Does the person have experience in caring for guineas?
  • Does the person have small children? There's a possibility of the child dragging the cage onto the floor.
Kennels
If you can't find a suitable person to care for them then a kennel is also an option. Although they aren't as common as they are for cats and dogs, they do exist and are always an option. Just make sure they know what they are doing!

Thank you for reading. Happy Piggymas!
